At the Denver meeting, newly elected members were given an overview of their leadership responsibilities, as they represent various geographic regions and cattle industry sectors on the Executive Committee. Vet-eran committee members shared their experiences leading the industry, recruiting NCBA new members, and working to enhance cattle industry growth and prosperity.
The group received leadership reports from NCBA President Andy Groseta, a rancher from Cottonwood, Ariz., as well as NCBA ’s regional vice presidents and Chief Executive Officer Terry Stokes. Groseta focused on the top priorities for his term as NCBA president: building overseas markets for U.S. beef; unifying the voice of agriculture in Washington, D.C., and with policy makers across the nation; and creating greater opportunities for young farmers and ranchers to succeed in the cattle industry.
Stokes focused his remarks on the long-term vision of NCBA, and how the organization is dealing with economic changes in the beef industry. He noted that high operating costs and a slow U.S. economy will force the industry to become even more efficient and innovative as it seeks to grow beef demand and maintain a positive business climate for cattlemen.
The committee also discussed proposed changes to the Beef Checkoff Program. Earlier this year, NCBA members voted to support legislative changes to the Beef Promotion and Research Act that would allow cattle producers to better determine the rate, structure and management of the beef checkoff.
The next meeting of the NCBA Executive Committee will be held at the Cattle Industry Summer Conference, which is scheduled July 15-19 in Denver.
