Jones was born on July 12, 1937 in Aliceville, Ala. to the late Josephine Jackson and Odie Jones Sr.; he has one sister Mattie B. Jones who resides in Aliceville.
Jones is a graduate of Summerville High School in Aliceville where he earned the honor of Class Saluta-torian. Shortly after graduation in 1955, he married his childhood sweetheart and current spouse, the former Dorothy R. Williams of Aliceville.
They have five children: Sheila A. Jones, Jeffery G. Jones, Ray D. Jones, Tracy A. Jones and Deidre R. Jones. They supported all five through high school and college graduations.
SMSgt Jones retired from the U.S. Air Force in May 1984, serving over 28 years. He had numerous military assignments in the U. S. and overseas, including a one year tour of duty in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He received 21 prestigious medals and awards during his military career.
While stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., SMSgt Jones joined the Bay Area Brotherhood, a nonprofit civic organization whose motto is: “Helping Disadvantaged Children.” As a charter member, he served several terms on the executive board, including Treasurer, Secretary, President and currently Vice President.
He also served as project officer for the Brotherhood’s annual events: Easter Egg Hunt, Spring Picnic, Project 100, Youth Athletics and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet. Jones is the organization ’s Historian, Friend-ship Committee Chairman and the Primary Staff Writer.
He has received three Member of the Year Awards and two Longevity Awards (15 years each). Whenever anyone in or outside the Bay Area Brotherhood has a question or needs help, they don ’t ask, “Who You Gonna Call?” They call Brother Odie Jones Jr.
