The Pickens Diabetic Support Group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at
12 noon at the Pickens Baptist Association office building in Carrollton.
Special speakers and informational programs for diabetics, their families,

UAB OFFERS ENCOURAGE, DIABETIC STUDY PROGRAM, IN REGION
Encourage is a new study program sponsored by UAB being made available to
counties in the West Alabama Black Belt region. It is an attempt to help
diabetics understand and manage their diabetes better. Free education classes,
information, recipes and diabetic reports will be provided to persons that

JOINT PTSO MEETING OF AES, AMS, AHS TO BE HELD SEPT. 2
The annual joint PTSO meeting of Aliceville Elementary School, Aliceville Middle
School and Aliceville High School will be held Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. at the AES/AMS
Cafeteria. Dr. Leonard Duff, Superintendent of Education, will be the guest
speaker. Please come out and support these schools.
PRE-APPLICATIONS FOR MOBILE PANTRY IN PICKENS COUNTY
The Mobile Pantry is looking to provide services to 200 qualified residents of
Pickens County on Thursday, Sept. 9, in Reform at the Old Westinghouse parking
lot from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Pre-applications will be taken only on
Wednesday, Sept. 1 (9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.); Friday, Sept. 3
(9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) at the Community Action office located at the Old Lakeside
School building in Carrollton. Please bring the following information: current
proof of income and social security cards for all household members. A card
will be given after completion of each application; you must bring the card

AMERICAN LEGION POST 104 TO MEET
American Legion Post 104 in Carrollton meets monthly on the first Thursday of
each month at 7 p.m. The next meeting is Sept. 2 at the American Legion Post on
Highway 17 in Carrollton. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

CHS TO HOLD GRAND REUNION
Plans are currently being made for a Grand Reunion for all former graduates,
faculty and staff of Carrollton High School (1934-2006) to be held on Sept.
3-4. In order to make this endeavor a huge success, the alumni association is
soliciting support from the community. First, we respectfully ask for your
participation and secondly, we ask that you help spread the word to your family
and friends who may be past graduates of Carrollton High School or who may know

BRYANT FAMILY REUNION
The Rev. Carey Bryant family reunion will be held Sunday, Sept. 5, at Union

ANNUAL SCOOBA DAY BARBECUE AND HORSE SHOW
The Scooba Riding Club will sponsor the annual Scooba Day Barbecue and Horse
Show on Sept. 4 at the Scooba Riding Club Arena. Sign-up begins at 9:30 a.m.,

SWEET TATER FESTIVAL IN CRANE HILL, ALA.
The 14th Annual Sweet Tater Festival will be held in Crane Hill in Cullman
County, Ala. on Labor Day Weekend. Events will be held on Sunday, Sept. 5, from
1 to 4 p.m. and on Labor Day (Monday), Sept. 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There
will be bags and bags of sweet taters (baked taters, fried tater pies and whole
tater pies), country style cooking, arts and crafts, live entertainment, door

The American Legion Post 40 and Auxiliary meets every third Thursday of the

TRIAL BY FIRE COOKOFF TO BE HELD AT PCMC ON SEPT. 17
The Pickens County Medical Center Foundation invites the public to join them for
a
“Trial By Fire Cookoff” on Sept. 17, 2010 at the Pickens County Medical Center Campus. Drop by, hang
out, and have fun as you cheer on your favorite attorney, physician, law
enforcement official or weekender! The
“Best Grilled Meat” Award will be presented by the judges. Beef, chicken, fish, lamb or pork plates
will be available via a $10 donation. Dine-in or carry-out, between 4 p.m. and
6 p.m.
AHS ANNOUNCES DATE OF 2010 HOMECOMING
The Aliceville High School Yellow Jackets have announced the date of their 2010
homecoming; it will be the Oct. 15 game when they host Greensboro High School.
AUBURN FOOTBALL CHAPLAIN TO SPEAK TO PCMC FOUNDATION
On Feb 24, 2011, at 6 p.m. at the PCMC HealthPlex, the PCMC Foundation will
sponsor D Dinner with Rev. Chette Williams as the keynote speaker. Rev.
Williams is the Auburn University football team's chaplain, the campus director
for the university's Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and is the FCA's State

Foster parents are needed to provide a home environment for children who are
unable to live safely in their home. Volunteers are also needed to serve as
positive role models for children of all ages, and volunteers are needed to

REFORM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COLLECTS BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Reform Elementary School is collecting Box Tops for Education. For every box top
that is turned in, RES receives 10 cents. It adds up quickly when you have help
from the community! Box tops can be found on various packages such as Betty
Crocker products, Fruit Roll Ups, Hamburger Helper, cereal and many, many more!
Why throw away money? Simply cut the box top off the package and drop them off
at Ashmore
’s Grocery or give them to a RES student to return to school.
ALICEVILLE SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER A GOOD PLACE FOR SENIORS TO GATHER
Come join the senior citizens at the Aliceville Senior Activity Center and enjoy
fun, fellowship and a nutritious noon meal. The only requirement is that you
are at least 60 years old. They have a variety of programs, including special
speakers, exercise, bingo, cards, dominoes, puzzles, covered dish dinners,
quilting, and monthly blood pressure checks, daily devotionals and spontaneous
singing. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more

COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY OPEN
The Pickens County Genealogical Library, located in the Old Jail/City Hall in
Gordo, is open for research from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first and third
Wednesday of each month.
Their monthly business meeting is held the first Wednesday of each month at 1
p.m. The Library will also be open from 8 a.m. until 12 noon on the first
Saturday for the months of March, April and May. They offer access to the
internet and Ancestry.com. They also have numerous records, publications,
family files and microfilm for research. They now have booklets available on

NAR-ANON FORMED FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTS
NAR-ANON, an organization for families and friends of drug and alcohol addicts,
has been formed in Pickens County and meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Stansel
Baptist Church
Family Life Center. They meet to: learn that drug abuse is an illness; share
problems; encourage addicts to seek help; replace despair with hope; and help

ATTENTION: VETERANS
Veterans: Do you know where your Discharge/ DD-214 is? If so, does your family
know what it looks like and where it is? In many cases, widows and dependents
do not have the veteran
’s discharge when the veteran dies. This document is needed to get a flag and
grave marker and file for any benefits they may be entitled to from the VA. If
you do not have a copy, please come by the Veteran

CARROLLTON SCHOOL COLLECTING BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Carrollton Elementary School is collecting Box Tops for Education and Campbell’s Soup labels. The school receives 10 cents for each box top and can get

HOW TO APPLY FOR LONG-TERM DISABILITY PARKING AT PROBATE OFFICE
Individuals with a long-term disability who want disability access parking
credentials must receive a physician's certification for the first five-year
period and may self-certify every other five-year period thereafter. Physician
certifications are required to obtain disability access parking credentials for
the period through Dec. 31, 2012. You can pick up an application at the Probate
Office in Carrollton.
COURTHOUSE PRESERVATION COMMITTEE SELLS CUPS, PRINTS, POSTCARDS
The Pickens County Courthouse Preservation Foundation is selling courthouse and
Face in the Window coffee cups, signed and numbered prints of the courthouse
(and the old Phoenix Hotel), and postcards featuring the Face in the Window as
part of their fundraising efforts to preserve the historic courthouse in
Carrollton. These items are available at the Pickens County Cooperative
Library, First National Bank of Central Alabama, West Alabama Bank, and the
