AMERICAN LEGION POST 40 MEETING
The American Legion Post 40 and Auxiliary meets every third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Peco Conference Center in Gordo. The next regular meeting will be on May 15.
MONTHLY SOIL AND WATER DISTRICT BOARD MEETING
The Pickens County Soil & Water Conservation District will hold their monthly board meeting on Thursday May 15, at 8:30 a.m. in the District Office located at 155 Reform Street Service Center Building, Room 304, in Carrollton. POLITICAL RALLY AT MCSHAN
There will be a political rally at the McShan Community Center on Saturday, May 17, at 6 p.m. There will be a covered dish supper; bring a dish and join them. All political candidates are invited as guests.
ALICEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1984 TO HOLD MEETING TO PLAN REUNION
The Aliceville High School Class of 1984 will have a class meeting on May 17 at 4 p.m. at Robert Wilder ’s (Cookie Man’s) plan. They will begin to discuss plans for the 25-year reunion. All class members are asked to please attend.
RETIREMENT CEREMONY, RECEPTION FOR DOT BARRENTINE
A retirement ceremony and reception will be held in honor of Dot McDaniel Barrentine of Aliceville on Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at Aliceville First Baptist Church. All former students of Dot ’s Kindergarten, their parents and grandparents, and all family and friends of “Miss Dot” are invited to attend this special occasion. She has been teaching kindergarten for 38 years.
AES TO PRESENT PLAY MAY 19
Aliceville Elementary School will present the play “It’s a Jungle Out There” on May 19 at 6 p.m. in the AES gymnasium. A second performance will be held May 20 at 1 p.m. Admission will be $3. Please come out and support the students.
PICKENSVILLE SPRING CARNIVAL TO BE MAY 22-26
The Town of Pickensville will hold its first spring carnival for the Memorial Day weekend, presented by Midway ’s Thrills of America Inc., beginning Thursday May 22 at 3 p.m. and ending Monday May 26, at 10 p.m. Additional schedules will be as follows: Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday hours will be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday hours will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Come and bring the family; enjoy the rides, games, carnival foods and other festivities. PICKENS COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM TO HOST SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
The Pickens County High School Varsity Football Team will sponsoring a softball tournament Saturday, May 24, at the Reform City Park. The team entry fee is $125 for men and $100 for women. The “hit off” time is 9 a.m. The competition will be double elimination with first and second place trophies to be awarded. AMERICAN LEGION POST 327 AND AUXILIARY TO MEET MAY 29
The American Legion Joseph Cousette Post 327 and Ladies Auxiliary Unit 327 of Aliceville meet on the last Thursday of each month in the basement of the Aliceville Civic Center. The Auxiliary meeting begins at 5:30 pm., and the American Legion meet at 7 p.m. The next meeting will be Thursday, May 29. All members and eligible persons are asked to please attend.

The retirees and former employees of American Bosch, AMBAC, United Technologies and Johnson Electric will hold a reunion and lunch at the Master Host Inn in Columbus, Miss. on June 7 at 10 a.m.

SCHOOLWIDE REUNION OF THE PICKENS COUNTY TRAINING SCHOOL        
The schoolwide reunion of the Pickens County Training School (which operated from 1915 to 1969) will be held  July 10-13. RETIRED EDUCATORS’ SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION AT HIGH SCHOOLS
The Pickens County Retired Educators Association has mailed applications and instructions for the PCREA scholarship to the three high schools in the county. If you are interested in applying, please obtain a copy at your school and fill it out.
 REFORM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COLLECTS BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Reform Elementary School is collecting Box Tops for Education. For every box top that is turned in, RES receives 10 cents. It adds up quickly when you have help from the community! Box tops can be found on various packages such as Betty Crocker products, Fruit Roll Ups, Hamburger Helper, cereal and many, many more! Why throw away money? Simply cut the box top off the package and drop them off at Ashmore ’s Grocery or give them to a RES student to return to school.
AMERICAN LEGION POST IN CARROLLTON NEEDS PRESERVING
Veterans and members of American Legion Post 104 have started a project of preserving their historical building. The World War I veterans are responsible for the post home, and they want to retain this building for the future of our country.  It is a historical building, and the veterans in the area want to keep it in this manner. Any donation for its future support will be gratefully appreciated. Anything in this regard can be mailed to W. T. Lipsey, PO Box 189, Carrollton, AL 35447, Adjutant of Post 104, American Legion.
COUNTY BOARD OF REGISTRARS HAS MOVED TO SERVICE CENTER
The office of the Pickens County Board of Registrars has moved to Room 308 of the Service Center building in Carrollton. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 367-2071 or 367-2074.
SMOCKING CLASSES TO BE TAUGHT AT CARROLLTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
Attention Pickens County residents: Smocking classes will be available at the Carrollton Public Library one morning a week. The members of the class who wish to join will determine the day. The cost of the classes will be $10 a class and will be taught by Sue Yarbrough. Please contact the Carrollton Public Library at 367-2142, if you are interested in joining the class.
COUNTY GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY TO OPEN FIRST TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH
The Pickens County Genealogical Library, located in the historical Old City Jail building, 2nd St. NW, Gordo, will be open the first Tuesday of each month from 2 to 7 p.m. The library is also open every first and third Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Meetings are the first Wednesday each month at 1 p.m. For more information, call 205-333-9950.

The Aliceville High School Class of 1978 is making plans for their 30-year class reunion. The dates for the reunion are Friday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 (the Labor Day weekend). ALICEVILLE SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER A GOOD PLACE FOR SENIORS TO GATHER
Come join the senior citizens at the Aliceville Senior Activity Center and enjoy fun, fellowship and a nutritious noon meal. The only requirement is that you are at least 60 years old. They have a variety of programs, including special speakers, exercise, bingo, cards, dominoes, puzzles, covered dish dinners, quilting, monthly blood pressure checks, daily devotionals and spontaneous singing. NAR-ANON FORMED FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTS
NAR-ANON, an organization for families and friends of drug and alcohol addicts, has been formed in Pickens County and meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Stansel Baptist Church  Family Life Center. They meet to: learn that drug abuse is an illness; share problems; encourage addicts to seek help; replace despair with hope; and help regain our self-confidence. CARROLLTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ACCEPTING CANS FOR RECYCLING
Carrollton Elementary School has started a recycling program. Every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., aluminum cans can be brought to the school gymnasium for recycling.
ATTENTION: VETERANS
Veterans: Do you know where your Discharge/ DD-214 is? If so, does your family know what it looks like and where it is? In many cases, widows and dependents do not have the veteran ’s discharge when the veteran dies. This document is needed to get a flag and grave marker and file for any benefits they may be entitled to from the VA. If you do not have a copy, please come by the Veteran ’s Affairs office located in the Service Center building in Carrollton. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 4 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.  The phone number is (205) 367-2099.
